BioAstin OmegaAstin is a softgel with 4 active ingredients. Algal oil supplies the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which support heart and brain health.
Natural astaxanthin is a carotenoid (a plant pigment) from algae believed to have antioxidant properties. Flaxseed oil contributes alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), another omega-3 that may support inflammation and cholesterol.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid. The softgel also contains inactive ingredients like modified cornstarch, carrageenan, glycerin, sorbitol, high oleic sunflower oil, soy lecithin, rosemary, tocopherols, ascorbyl palmitate, and purified water.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold on BioAstin's active ingredients is mixed and often limited. Algal oil shows possibly effective evidence for preterm labor prevention, but the data rates it possibly ineffective for fractures, cystic fibrosis, physical performance, and cognitive function — and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Astaxanthin's effectiveness for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome all lack sufficient reliable evidence. Flaxseed oil is rated possibly ineffective for obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, bipolar disorder, and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia).

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Algal oil is generally well tolerated by most healthy adults at typical supplement doses. One case of increased hair loss was reported in a child after completing DHA supplementation, though a direct link isn't clear, and theoretical concerns exist about itching, rash, or hand warmth — though these remain unconfirmed.
DHA may modestly raise LDL cholesterol (the "bad" kind) by about 8% in some people without heart disease, and observational research suggests a possible link between higher DHA intake and prostate cancer risk, though evidence remains unclear. For pregnancy, DHA is often recommended but use only under your doctor's guidance; during breastfeeding, talk to your provider first.
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited — avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety information. Common side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools; higher doses have caused severe stomach pain in rare cases.
Flaxseed oil is generally well tolerated, though a small number of people report changes in bowel habits, dry mouth, and upset stomach at 5 grams daily; high doses (30+ grams daily) may cause loose stools and diarrhea. Rare severe allergic reactions are possible.
Pregnancy data suggest it's possibly safe, but check with your doctor; breastfeeding safety information is limited.

natural Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Algal Oil
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking algal oil with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with the effects of antidiabetes drugs and reduce their effects.
Most algal oil contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Clinical research in people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking antidiabetes drugs, shows that taking DHA 4 grams daily for 6 weeks increases fasting blood glucose levels by about 18 mg/dL when compared with taking olive oil.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking algal oil with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Algal oil usually contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and/or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). There is evidence that fish oil, which also contains DHA and EPA, can modestly lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensive drugs.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, algal oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
The risk of interaction is highest for algal oil containing high amounts (> 2 grams daily) of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), or EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). High doses of EPA or oils containing EPA and DHA can reduce platelet aggregation in humans. However, most algal oil contains very little EPA and larger amounts of DHA. While some conflicting evidence exist, most research shows that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting.
Flaxseed Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, using flaxseed oil in combination with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding.
Small clinical studies show that consuming flaxseed oil might decrease platelet aggregation and increase bleeding time.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining flaxseed oil with other antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical evidence suggests that long-term consumption of flaxseed oil can modestly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while other clinical research shows no effect.
Ezetimibe (Zetia)
Concomitant use of flaxseed oil and ezetimibe reduces the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseed oil.
In one clinical study, concomitant consumption of ezetimibe 10 mg daily with flaxseed oil 2 grams providing 1 gram of alpha-linolenic acid daily blocked the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid, resulting in an overall reduction in alpha-linolenic plasma levels from baseline.
