HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Original Papaya Leaf Extract 600 mg by Herbal Goodness
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: papaya leaf extract at 600 mg per capsule. Papaya leaf extract is a concentrated form derived from the leaves of the papaya plant.
The capsule itself is made from pullulan (a plant-based material) and rice hull concentrate, which are inactive ingredients that help form and fill the capsule.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for papaya leaf extract isn't established for the conditions listed in our data — aging skin, hair loss, colorectal cancer, and diabetes all show insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works. This doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the studies to prove it aren't solid enough yet for us to say.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Papaya leaf extract itself is generally well tolerated, though nausea and vomiting have been reported in some people taking it. Ripe papaya fruit eaten as food is safe, but the supplement form and unripe papaya are less well studied.
You should avoid unripe (green) papaya, papaya latex, and papaya seeds. There isn't enough safety data on file about this ingredient during breastfeeding to know either way — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
A small number of people may have allergic reactions, especially those with a latex allergy.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners like warfarin, diabetes medications, amiodarone (a heart rhythm drug), or levothyroxine (thyroid replacement) — all have documented Moderate interactions with papaya leaf extract.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This single-ingredient papaya leaf supplement is generally well tolerated, but it interacts with a wide range of medications — most notably blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and thyroid replacements. If you take any prescription medication, particularly for your heart, blood sugar, bleeding risk, or thyroid, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
The evidence for what it treats isn't solid yet, so weigh that against the interaction risk for your situation.

Original Papaya Leaf Extract 600 mg by Herbal Goodness Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Goodness Original Papaya Leaf Extract has documented interactions with multiple medications through its papaya leaf extract content.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulants) like warfarin — papaya extract may increase warfarin's effects and side effects, potentially raising your bleeding risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Moderate interactions are also documented with diabetes drugs, where papaya extract may add to their blood-sugar-lowering effect and raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Amiodarone, a heart rhythm medication, may also reach higher levels in your bloodstream.
Additionally, if you take levothyroxine for thyroid replacement, consuming large amounts of papaya could reduce how well the medication works.
Altogether, these interactions span 92 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications through the checker on this page or talk with your doctor or pharmacist — especially if you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, heart medications, or thyroid replacements.

For each ingredient in Original Papaya Leaf Extract 600 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Papaya leaf extract
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, papaya extract may increase the levels and clinical effects of amiodarone.
Animal research in rats shows that a single oral dose of papaya extract, as well as multiple doses of papaya extract daily over 14 days, prior to a single dose of amiodarone delays the time to maximum amiodarone concentration. However, only the 14-day papaya extract regimen increases systemic amiodarone exposure by 60% to 70%. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Concomitant use of antidiabetic drugs with fermented papaya can produce additive effects. It is unclear if other forms of papaya have the same effect.
A small low-quality clinical study in patients with type 2 diabetes who are taking glibenclamide shows that taking a fermented papaya preparation 3 grams daily for 2 months decreases fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels when compared to baseline. Additionally, of the 25 patients in the study, 9 required a reduction in glibenclamide dose.
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Theoretically, consuming large quantities of papaya fruit can reduce the clinical effects of levothyroxine.
In one case-report, a 37-year-old male with a history of thyroidectomy who was stabilized on levothyroxine for 5 years presented with hypothyroidism after consuming 5-6 papaya fruits daily for 14 days during vacation. In a controlled re-challenge test involving 5-6 papayas daily, the patient remained euthyroid for 7 days, but developed mild hypothyroidism after 14 days. Both times, thyroid levels normalized 40-45 days after discontinuing papaya.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, concomitant use of warfarin with papain-containing papaya extract might increase the effects and side effects of warfarin.
In one case report, a patient previously stable on warfarin was found to have an international normalization ratio (INR) of 7.4, which was attributed to ingestion of a supplement containing papain from papaya extract.
