Protease, lipase, and artichoke are generally well tolerated, though lipase should be used only under medical guidance if you have serious digestive conditions. Betaine HCl can irritate the stomach and is not safe if you have ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux — it may also cause heartburn.

Artichoke can trigger allergic reactions, especially in people sensitive to ragweed and related plants (the Asteraceae family), and rare anaphylaxis from artichoke inulin has been reported. Theoretically, artichoke leaf extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies shows that taking artichoke leaf extract for 8-12 weeks can modestly reduce fasting plasma glucose when compared with placebo.
