Pumpkin seed oil is generally well tolerated; the most common side effects in trials were mild abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rare cases of severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea have been linked to high concentrations of a compound called cucurbitacin found in wild or bitter-tasting pumpkins.

There are also two isolated case reports of temporary hair loss after eating bitter pumpkin or squash. Pygeum and saw palmetto are also generally well tolerated; saw palmetto's common side effects include abdominal pain, constipation, decreased libido, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Rare reports of heart-related effects such as irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and chest pain have been noted with saw palmetto, though causation is unclear. For pregnancy: pumpkin seed oil has insufficient safety data — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.

Pygeum and saw palmetto should both be avoided during pregnancy due to hormonal effects and lack of safety data. For breastfeeding: safety data for concentrated pumpkin supplements and pygeum are insufficient or lacking — discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.
