Pro-Bio Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Enzymedica
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pro-Bio against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pro-Bio by Enzymedica
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Pro-Bio is a probiotic blend with 8 active ingredients, mostly Lactobacillus species (L. acidophilus, L. casei, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, L. paracasei, L. salivarius, and L. bulgaricus) plus Bacillus subtilis. These are live beneficial bacteria meant to support gut health.
The product also contains inactive ingredients — gellan gum, cellulose, and water — that serve as fillers and the capsule material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold is mixed and limited. L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bacillus subtilis is possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea but has insufficient evidence for athletic performance, cirrhosis, constipation, eczema, and diabetes. L. bulgaricus lacks established evidence for acne, hay fever, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, asthma, fatty liver disease, or the common cold in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though some people report uncommon gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea when taking it with other probiotics. Bacillus subtilis is generally well tolerated but has limited safety data; one headache was reported in a trial, and diarrhea rarely.
Both can theoretically cause serious infection (bacteremia, sepsis, abscess) in people who are severely ill or immunocompromised, though this is rare. For L. acidophilus in pregnancy, the data suggest it's possibly safe; L. bulgaricus safety in pregnancy is not well studied.
Lactation data are not on file for these ingredients.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting Pro-Bio, especially if you take antibiotics — these are the main concern and could have reduced effectiveness if taken at the same time. Space this product several hours away from antibiotic doses.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pro-Bio is a multi-strain probiotic used mainly for gut support and may help with antibiotic-related diarrhea. If you take antibiotics, space them several hours away from this product so the bacteria aren't killed.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it, especially if you're severely ill, immunocompromised, pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Pro-Bio by Enzymedica Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Enzymedica Pro-Bio contains several probiotic ingredients that interact with antibiotics.
Through its L. acidophilus, Bacillus subtilis, and L. bulgaricus content, this product may decrease the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs — a Moderate severity interaction. Since these are live microorganisms, antibiotics can kill a significant number of them when taken at the same time.

To protect the probiotics' effectiveness, separate when you take antibiotics and this supplement by spacing them apart (your doctor or pharmacist can tell you how long). We couldn't check L. rhamnosus, L. casei, L. plantarum, L. paracasei, or L. salivarius — we hold no interaction data for these ingredients.
