These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, because they contain live organisms, there is a small theoretical risk of infection in people who are very ill or have severely weakened immune systems — that's why caution is advised in those groups.

Rare gastrointestinal side effects have been reported, including abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea; rashes have been noted in one trial, though it's unclear which ingredient caused them. Very rare cases of serious infection (bacteremia or sepsis) have occurred in critically ill patients and premature infants.
