ProBiotic-4 Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Swanson
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking ProBiotic-4 against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of ProBiotic-4 by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This capsule contains five active ingredients: two species of Lactobacillus bacteria (L. acidophilus and L. casei), two species of Bifidobacterium bacteria (B. bifidum and B. animalis lactis), and NutraFlora scFOS, a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria. The live bacteria are meant to support your digestive and immune function, while the prebiotic fiber helps them thrive.
The rest of the capsule is made up of inactive ingredients—hypromellose, gellan gum, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica—which help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold shows that Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). L. acidophilus also appears possibly effective for H. pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For other conditions the ingredients are marketed for—like allergies, anxiety, or respiratory infections—the evidence in our data is either insufficient to rate or suggests the ingredient may not be effective. We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for the prebiotic or the other two bacterial strains.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though those with weakened immune systems should be cautious and talk with their doctor first. The most commonly reported side effects with probiotic use are bloating and flatulence, though these haven't been specifically documented for B. bifidum alone.
Rare cases of infection (sepsis, bacteremia) have been reported with L. acidophilus in critically ill patients, but these are uncommon. The prebiotic ingredient (NutraFlora scFOS) can cause gas and bloating, especially at higher doses, though studies at doses under 10 grams daily show these effects don't necessarily occur more often than with placebo.
Limited safety data exist for supplement-level doses of all these ingredients, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The main medication type to double-check is antibiotic drugs—these have a moderate-severity interaction with the Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product. If you're on an antibiotic, use the search tool on this page to confirm your specific medication, then talk with your pharmacist about spacing doses.
We could not check two of the bacterial ingredients in this product for interactions, so if you have other health conditions or take multiple medications, it's worth a full review with your pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
ProBiotic-4 may help with IBS and a few digestive or bacterial infections, depending on which ingredient is active for your situation. If you take antibiotics, space out your doses from this probiotic or the antibiotics may cancel out the probiotic's benefit.
People with weakened immune systems should talk with their doctor first. For personalized advice on whether this product is right for you, check with your own doctor or pharmacist.

ProBiotic-4 by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
ProBiotic-4 by Swanson contains Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus, both of which interact with antibiotic drugs.
When you take antibiotics at the same time as these live probiotics, the antibiotics may kill off a significant number of the beneficial organisms, which could reduce how well the probiotic works. This is a moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The good news is that timing matters here. If you're on an antibiotic, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about spacing out when you take your antibiotic and this probiotic—they'll likely recommend separating doses by a few hours so the antibiotic doesn't wipe out the live cultures you're trying to get.
We could not check two of the five ingredients in this product—Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium animalis lactis—because we don't hold interaction data for them. The fifth ingredient, NutraFlora scFOS (a prebiotic fiber), was checked and showed no interactions are documented.
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications. Run your exact antibiotic through the search tool on this page to see if it's one of them.
