HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic Bio-Tract Technology by Vitamin World
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has 2 active ingredients: sodium and a Bio-Active Probiotic Complex. We have data on sodium but not on the probiotic complex itself, so we can't speak to what live cultures or strains it contains or their intended roles.
The inactive ingredients listed include vegetable cellulose, pectin, and sodium carbonate — standard capsule and binding materials.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Sodium is rated likely effective for cystic fibrosis and possibly effective for amphotericin B nephrotoxicity (kidney damage from a fungal medication). For bipolar disorder and congestive heart failure, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate it.
We have no effectiveness data on the Bio-Active Probiotic Complex.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is well tolerated in normal dietary amounts up to the Chronic Disease Risk Reduction guideline of 2.3 grams per day. Serious side effects are rare but can include worsened heart disease, high blood pressure, and kidney disease.
Too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure and heart strain, and some population research ties high sodium intake to increased gastric cancer risk. Pregnancy and lactation safety data is mixed — sodium is rated likely safe in pregnancy but possibly unsafe in lactation.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product fits your sodium intake before you start.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium, any blood pressure medication (antihypertensive), corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate bowel prep, tolvaptan, or any other sodium-containing drug or supplement. All of these interactions are rated Moderate severity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take lithium, blood pressure medications, corticosteroids, or any other sodium-containing drug or supplement, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product. Even if you don't take medications, remember that a high sodium intake carries cardiovascular and kidney risks — normal dietary sodium is fine, but supplemental sodium needs medical oversight.

Probiotic Bio-Tract Technology by Vitamin World Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Probiotic Bio-Tract Technology by Vitamin World contains sodium, which interacts with blood pressure medications, corticosteroids, lithium, and several other drug types.
The most serious concern is with lithium — changing how much sodium you eat or take as a supplement can shift lithium levels in your blood significantly, potentially causing lithium toxicity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium can also reduce how well blood pressure medications work, and it raises the risk of dangerously high sodium levels in your blood (hypernatremia) if you're taking corticosteroids, didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate bowel prep, tolvaptan, or other sodium-containing drugs. All of these interactions are rated Moderate.
We could not check the Bio-Active Probiotic Complex ingredient — we hold no data for it. Altogether, these interactions span 205 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Probiotic Bio-Tract Technology with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
