Serrapeptase Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Serrapeptase against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: serrapeptase, a proteolytic enzyme (a protein-digesting enzyme) derived from the silkworm gut bacterium. It works by breaking down certain proteins in the body, which is the mechanism behind its studied uses in respiratory and musculoskeletal conditions.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—rice flour, vegetable capsule material, magnesium stearate, and silica—which are fillers and binders that help deliver the active ingredient.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence on serrapeptase is limited. For chronic bronchitis, asthma, atherosclerosis, back pain, and osteoporosis, the data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works.
That means studies are either small, mixed, or not yet robust enough to draw firm conclusions about whether it delivers a real benefit for those conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Serrapeptase is generally well tolerated in short-term use, though long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach pain, general gastrointestinal upset, and nausea—though these appear to occur at roughly the same rate as placebo in trials.
A rare serious side effect (bullous pemphigoid, a blistering skin condition) has been reported. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so the evidence advises against use.
The same applies to breastfeeding—no reliable safety information exists, so it's best avoided.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking serrapeptase, check with your own doctor or pharmacist if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs—warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and similar medications. Serrapeptase may increase your bleeding and bruising risk when combined with these drugs.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we hold data on.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Serrapeptase may appeal to you if you're exploring options for respiratory health or joint support, but the evidence for those uses is still thin. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, you'll need to clear this with your own doctor or pharmacist first—the interaction risk is real.
Talk it over with your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any regular medications.
