Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Shilajit product and its label doesn't state a use — see Shilajit's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for shilajit isn't established yet in the data we hold. The product is marketed for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), and osteopenia (low bone density), but all of these carry insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works for those purposes.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Shilajit is generally well tolerated, though a rare case of allergy has been reported—one woman developed hives after a higher dose and later anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) after taking it with food and exercise. Headache is reported rarely in clinical research.

A case of high blood pressure related to mineral imbalance occurred in a woman who took shilajit during pregnancy for 6 months, though a direct link couldn't be confirmed. The safety data advises against shilajit during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to contamination risk and insufficient safety data.

Because unpurified shilajit may contain heavy metals or other contaminants, use only purified, tested brands.

  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Shilajit Gold Grade, double-check your exact antidiabetes drugs (insulin, metformin, glibenclamide, and related medications) with the search tool on this page. Shilajit can lower blood sugar on its own and may raise the risk of hypoglycemia when combined with these medications.

Formula

64 million years is not a joke even for a planet and many things happened globally over such period of time: new continents been created, moving apart and jointed again, many ice ages passed, volcanoes erupted and meteorites bombarded our planet. Jungles became those high altitude rocky mountains and approximately that time our lovely cactus passed away mummified for another 60 million years transforming in a fossil deposit. Now you know what you are holding in hands.

Raw Shilajit.

Shilajit (Sanskrit:, in Farsi or Dari, silajatu, in Urdu) or Mumijo is a black exudate from high mountain rocks, often found in the Himalayas, Karakoram, Nepal, Girda (India), Russia, Mongolia. The English word Shilajit is a phonetic adaptation of "silajit" (Hindi:), which in turn goes back to Sanskrit (Sanskrit:, silajatu). The literal meaning of the Sanskrit compound is "mountain tar", the first element (sila) meaning "pertaining to, or having the properties of a rock, mountain", the second (jatu) denoting "gum, lac; any tarry substance".

Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.

Shilajit Gold Grade by Health Republic: Common Questions

Does Shilajit Gold Grade by Health Republic interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Shilajit Gold Grade has a known interaction with 86 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Shilajit Gold Grade contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take shilajit if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data advises against it during pregnancy due to contamination risk and insufficient safety information. Avoid it while breastfeeding as well, since safety is unknown.
Does shilajit really work for Alzheimer disease or other conditions?
The evidence isn't established in the data we hold. Shilajit is marketed for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, enlarged prostate, and low bone density, but all of these lack sufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works.
What side effects might I experience?
Headache is reported rarely in research. A rare allergic reaction—hives and, in one case, a severe reaction—has been documented. If you notice hives, rash, or any signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking it and seek help right away.
Why does the label say to use a purified brand?
Unpurified shilajit may contain heavy metals or other contaminants that could be harmful. Always buy from a tested, purified source.
I take metformin for diabetes. Can I take this shilajit?
Not without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first. Shilajit lowers blood sugar on its own and can increase the risk of low blood sugar when combined with metformin or other antidiabetes drugs. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose or monitor you more closely.
