Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: taurine, an amino acid your body makes naturally and gets from foods like meat and fish. Taurine plays roles in heart function, bile acid formation, and several other processes.
The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose (a binder), and stearic acid.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
In our data, taurine is rated possibly effective for hepatitis and congestive heart failure (a condition where the heart doesn't pump blood efficiently). For obesity, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.
The word 'possibly' means the evidence is there but not yet strong or complete — more research is needed to say how reliably it works for these conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in typical doses for up to a year. The most common mild side effects are constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Serious side effects are rare — a small number of case reports describe allergic reactions, mainly in people with a history of sulfa or sulfite allergies. One case report linked an energy drink containing taurine and several other ingredients to manic symptoms, but it's unclear whether taurine was the cause.
Long-term safety beyond one year isn't well studied. Taurine occurs naturally in breast milk, but the safety of taurine supplements during pregnancy and lactation hasn't been thoroughly researched — the data we hold says it's likely safe, but more evidence would help.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to use it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) or lithium. Taurine may lower blood pressure further and could raise lithium levels, both Moderate concerns.
Altogether, these interactions span 173 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Taurine may be worth considering if you're interested in liver or heart health support, since it's rated possibly effective for both hepatitis and congestive heart failure. But if you take blood pressure medications or lithium, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — this supplement can interact with both.
For anyone else, it's generally well tolerated, but long-term safety data is limited.

Taurine 500 mg by Solgar Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solgar's Taurine 500 mg can interact with blood pressure medications and lithium, so you'll want to check your current prescriptions before starting it.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Taurine may lower blood pressure on its own. If you're already taking a blood pressure medication (antihypertensive drug), combining them could push your pressure too low — a Moderate severity concern.
Some clinical evidence backs this up: taurine has been shown to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in studies.
If you take lithium for bipolar disorder or another condition, taurine may interfere with how your body clears it. Taurine appears to have mild diuretic properties (it makes you urinate slightly more), which could reduce lithium excretion and raise lithium levels in your blood — also Moderate severity.
High lithium levels carry real risks, so this one matters.
Additionally, use the medication checker below to run through your exact drugs before you start.
