Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 3 of its 3 active ingredients.
  • “Sorghum bran (Sorghum bicolor) extract” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (300 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.
  • “White Mulberry extract” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (150 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

Tri Sugar Shield contains three active ingredients chosen for blood sugar support. The product includes phlorizin, an extract compound that works on kidney sugar transporters; 1-deoxynojirimycin and proanthocyanidins; and extracts from sorghum bran and white mulberry, each of which contributes multiple active components.

The capsules also contain inactive ingredients—vegetable cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, maltodextrin, silica, and stearic acid—that serve as binders and fillers.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

We hold no graded evidence for this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support healthy blood sugar levels.
  • We looked for evidence on: Diabetes, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), postprandial glucose control, metabolic health.
  • Our graded evidence for these ingredients doesn't cover that particular purpose.

We don't have effectiveness data on file for the ingredients in this product. While animal research shows phlorizin can lower blood glucose, human trial data for phlorizin supplements aren't available in our records.

The same goes for proanthocyanidins, 1-deoxynojirimycin, sorghum bran, and white mulberry—their effectiveness in people isn't established in the data we hold.

How safe is it?

Some data gaps
Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Human safety data for phlorizin taken as a supplement are very limited. The safety notes advise against phlorizin in pregnancy because reliable data don't exist, and the same goes for breastfeeding—there's no safety information, so it's best avoided if you're nursing.

For the other active ingredients in this product, we don't have adverse effect or safety data on file, so we can't tell you what to expect.

Moderate interaction found

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Phlorizin.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check your antidiabetes drugs before you start—phlorizin has a Moderate interaction risk because it could theoretically add to their blood-sugar-lowering effect. We cannot evaluate the interaction risk of the other active ingredients, so run your complete medication list through the search tool below.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.

If you take antidiabetes medication, talk to your pharmacist before starting Tri Sugar Shield—phlorizin might lower your blood sugar further. Because we can't fully check most of the ingredients in this product and human safety data are sparse, a conversation with your healthcare provider makes sense, especially if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that white mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose levels. Advise patients to monitor glucose levels closely.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Organic Cation Transporter 2 (Oct2) Substrates

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might slow the elimination and increase the adverse effects of drugs which are OCT2 substrates.
Animal research shows that coadministration of white mulberry leaf extract with metformin, an OCT2 substrate, slows the renal elimination of metformin via inhibition of OCT2 activity. OCT2 is expressed in the kidneys and is responsible for transporting cationic drugs into tubular epithelial cells in order to be excreted in the urine.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Phloridzin1 drug type · 86 drugs

Antidiabetes Drugs

Phlorizin is a potent, nonselective inhibitor of SGLT1 and SGLT2. It has been shown to reduce blood glucose levels in animal research. Theoretically, phlorizin might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. However, the likelihood of this effect is unclear due to the poor bioavailability and rapid degradation of phlorizin. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Tri Sugar Shield by Life Extension: Common Questions

Does Tri Sugar Shield by Life Extension interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Tri Sugar Shield has a known interaction with 87 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tri Sugar Shield contains 3 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What does phlorizin do in this formula?
Phlorizin is a compound that blocks certain transporters in your kidneys that normally filter blood sugar back into your body. In animal studies it has lowered blood glucose levels, though human research is limited and absorption of the supplement form is poor.
Is it safe to take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Safety data for phlorizin in pregnancy and breastfeeding are too limited to recommend it. The safety information we have advises against use in both cases. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Are there any side effects I should know about?
We don't have data on adverse effects for the ingredients in this product. Human safety information for phlorizin supplements is very limited, so side effect data aren't well established.
Can I take this with my diabetes medication?
Phlorizin may theoretically add to the blood-sugar-lowering effect of diabetes drugs and raise the risk of low blood sugar. Use the search tool on this page to check your specific medication, then talk to your pharmacist or doctor before you start.
Why can't you check all the ingredients?
We don't hold monograph data for proanthocyanidins or 1-deoxynojirimycin, and the sorghum bran and white mulberry extracts are blends of multiple components that aren't individually available in our database. That limits how much we can tell you about their interactions and safety.
