Ultra Potency Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Swanson
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Ultra Potency Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
This formula contains 13 active ingredients, most of them live probiotic bacteria and one prebiotic fiber. The bacterial strains are L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, B. lactis, L. bulgaricus, L. salivarius, B. bifidum, L. gasseri, L. plantarum, L. casei, B. longum, L. reuteri, and Bacillus coagulans (marketed as LactoSpore).
The prebiotic is NutraFlora scFOS, a short-chain fructo-oligosaccharide that acts as food for beneficial bacteria. The inactive ingredients are a vegetable capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, calcium palmitate, and silica.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for probiotics is mixed and varies by strain and condition. L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, H. pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
B. bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections. Bacillus coagulans (LactoSpore) is possibly effective for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
For most other conditions in the data—including asthma, allergies, anxiety, cognitive decline, and athletic performance—the evidence is insufficient to rate these ingredients. The prebiotic NutraFlora scFOS also lacks reliable evidence for any of the conditions studied.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The most common side effects are mild and gastrointestinal: bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and rarely diarrhea or vomiting.
Since these are live organisms, there is a theoretical concern that in severely ill, immunocompromised, or premature infants they could cause serious infections like bacteremia or sepsis; however, such cases are rare and mainly reported in patients with weakened immune systems, central lines, or critical illness. NutraFlora scFOS can cause gas and bloating, especially at higher doses, though studies suggest mild doses (under 10 grams daily) cause no more bloating than placebo.
Because safety data are limited for supplement-level use, check with your doctor before starting, especially if you're seriously ill or immune-compromised.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the main concern (Moderate severity). Theoretically, taking this probiotic at the same time as antibiotics may reduce the probiotic's effectiveness, because antibiotics can kill the live organisms.
Separate the timing of your antibiotics and this product—ask your doctor or pharmacist how long the interval should be for your specific antibiotic.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with irritable bowel syndrome, certain types of diarrhea, and constipation, though evidence is strongest for the acidophilus and Bacillus strains. If you take antibiotics, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about timing—you'll likely need to space out the doses.
If you're very ill, immunocompromised, or have a central line, ask your doctor whether probiotics are right for you. Check your medications against this product's ingredients before you start.

Ultra Potency Probiotic by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Ultra Potency Probiotic contains several live bacterial strains—L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, B. bifidum, L. gasseri, and Bacillus coagulans (LactoSpore)—that all interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious concern is Moderate: taking this product alongside antibiotics may reduce how well the live organisms in the probiotic work, because antibiotics can kill a significant portion of them. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
To get the full benefit from the probiotic, it's best to separate when you take antibiotics and this product. The exact timing should come from your doctor or pharmacist, since the interval depends on the antibiotic type and your situation.
We could not check three other bacterial strains in this formula—L. rhamnosus, L. salivarius, L. plantarum, and L. casei—because we don't hold interaction data for them. NutraFlora scFOS (a prebiotic fiber in the blend) has no interactions documented in our data.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your specific drugs interact with the ingredients we could assess.
