What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) at 40 mg per capsule. Chaste tree is a plant used traditionally for hormonal support, particularly in women's health.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — rice flour, cellulose, and calcium silicate — which are standard fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chaste tree is rated possibly effective for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and mastalgia (breast tenderness), based on the evidence we hold. For premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and anxiety, the research we have access to is too limited to say whether it works.
Aging skin and fractures don't have reliable evidence supporting its use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chaste tree is generally well tolerated when taken short-term, but because it affects hormones, use it under guidance. The most common side effects reported in studies were diarrhea, fatigue, headache, insomnia, irregular menstruation, nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting.
Skin reactions — itching, rash, acne, eczema — and irregular or prolonged menstrual bleeding have also been reported. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to possible hormonal effects and limited safety information.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against this product if you take antipsychotics, dopamine agonists, metoclopramide (Reglan), oral contraceptives, or estrogens — all Moderate severity interactions have been documented. Your pharmacist can review your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs using the search tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chaste tree may help with PMS and breast tenderness, but it interacts with several important medication classes — especially those that work on dopamine and hormonal drugs. If you take antipsychotics, dopamine agonists, birth control, hormone replacement therapy, or metoclopramide, check with your pharmacist before starting.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are not recommended.
