Vitex Agnus-castus and Ethinyl Estradiol, Ethynodiol Diacetate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Vitex Agnus-castus interacts with whole categories of medication. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Ethynodiol Diacetate

Ethinyl Estradiol, Ethynodiol Diacetate falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Vitex Agnus-castus interacts with.

Theoretically, vitex agnus-castus could interfere with oral contraceptives.
Vitex agnus-castus might interfere with the efficacy of oral contraceptives due to possible hormone modulating activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your birth control pill (Demulen, Zovia, Kelnor) uses steady hormone levels to prevent pregnancy. Vitex (chasteberry) can nudge your own reproductive hormones by acting on the pituitary gland and lowering prolactin. In theory, that hormone tinkering could work against the careful balance your pill is trying to keep, which might make it slightly less reliable at preventing pregnancy.

I want to be honest with you, though: this concern is theoretical. We don't have strong human studies showing the pill actually fails when paired with vitex. Still, since an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, I'd play it safe. Chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and consider a backup method like condoms if you do.

ESTROGENS

Vitex agnus-castus has hormone modulating activity that can interfere with the efficacy of hormone replacement therapy.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination pills you asked about contains hormones, ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) plus a progestin, and it works by keeping your hormone levels steady to prevent pregnancy and regulate your cycle. Vitex (chasteberry) has its own effects on reproductive hormones, mainly by nudging dopamine and lowering prolactin. In theory, that hormone tinkering could work against the carefully balanced hormones in your pill.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this concern comes only from lab and animal research, not from real people, so it is more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, since this is birth control, you do not want anything quietly weakening it. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Vitex so they can help you stay protected.
