Efavirenz falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Acacia Rigidula interacts with.

Theoretically, Acacia rigidula products that are adulterated with beta-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA) might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme by 37%.

Here's the gist for your HIV medicine. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear efavirenz. Some Acacia rigidula products have been found spiked with a hidden stimulant called BMPEA, and in lab dish studies that compound slowed CYP3A4 by about a third. If that happened in a real person, efavirenz could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean more of its usual effects like dizziness, vivid dreams, trouble sleeping, or grogginess.

To be fair, this is only a theoretical, test-tube finding, not something proven in people. Still, with HIV treatment you don't want anything throwing off your levels, plus these products carry real safety concerns of their own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

What Is Efavirenz Used For?

Brand name: Sustiva

Efavirenz is used to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection. It is always used together with other antiretroviral medicines — never on its own.

It is approved for adults and for children who are at least 3 months old and weigh at least 3.5 kg (about 7.7 lbs). Both the capsule and tablet forms are approved for this use.
