Adenosine and Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

METHYLXANTHINES

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls under METHYLXANTHINES — the group Adenosine interacts with.

Methylxanthines are competitive antagonists of adenosine and can block its pharmacologic effects.
The methylxanthines, aminophylline, caffeine, and theophylline, can block the effects of adenosine by acting as competitive antagonists at adenosine cell surface receptors. It is recommended that methylxanthines be avoided for 24 hours prior to cardiac stress tests.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece that matters here is the caffeine in this combination product. Caffeine belongs to a family called methylxanthines, and it works partly by blocking adenosine's signals in the body. So if you take an adenosine supplement alongside this, the caffeine can dampen what the adenosine is doing, and vice versa. Think of them as gently working against each other.

Honestly, this is a theoretical, minor concern based on how these molecules behave, not something likely to cause real trouble from a swallowed supplement. The bigger practical point: caffeine (even in coffee, tea, or these tablets) can interfere with a cardiac stress test, so doctors often ask you to skip it for about 24 hours beforehand. If you have a heart rhythm issue or a stress test coming up, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate page

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”

About Adenosine

What is Adenosine?

Adenosine
  • Energy and cellular function support
  • Athletic performance and muscle energy
  • Circulation support
  • General wellness

Adenosine is a natural building block your body uses for energy and cell signaling, and a prescription injectable version is used by doctors to treat certain fast heart rhythms. As an over-the-counter supplement (often sold as AMP or ATP), there is little strong evidence that swallowing it boosts energy or performance, and quality can vary. Talk to your pharmacist before using adenosine supplements, especially if you have a heart condition.
