Fenfluamine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.

Here's the gist for Fintepla (fenfluramine): it works in the brain and can have a calming, sedating side. Adrue has been studied mostly in animals, where it seemed to deepen and lengthen the sleepiness caused by sedative medicines. So the worry here is simply adding up: combining the two could leave a child more drowsy, sluggish, dizzy, or unsteady than usual, and fenfluramine already can cause tiredness and balance trouble.

To be honest, this is based on lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so the real-world risk isn't well proven. Still, because fenfluramine is a seizure medicine used in young kids, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or your child's neurologist before adding adrue, rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. Solid human studies are lacking, so its real benefits and safe doses are not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Fenfluramine Used For?

Brand name: Fintepla

Fintepla (fenfluramine oral solution) is approved to treat seizures associated with Dravet syndrome (DS) and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in patients 2 years of age and older. It is used alongside other antiseizure medications.

Both conditions are severe, often hard-to-control forms of epilepsy that typically begin in childhood. Fintepla is available only through a restricted program called the Fintepla REMS because of serious heart-related risks.
