Mephenytoin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Mephenytoin (Mesantoin) is a seizure medicine, and like other pills you swallow, it has to dissolve and get absorbed from your gut to work. Because algin is a thick, gel-forming seaweed fiber, the concern here is purely about timing: if you take them at the same moment, the gel could trap a little of the medicine and slightly reduce how much gets into your body. In theory, that could mean a touch less seizure protection.

I want to be honest with you, though. This is a theoretical interaction based on how algin behaves, not on real patient reports, and it's rated minor. An easy fix is to space them out: take your mephenytoin first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the algin. Please confirm your timing with your pharmacist or doctor.
