Ashitaba and Clarithromycin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Clarithromycin and Ashitaba in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Ashitaba safety at a glance

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Clarithromycin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Clarithromycin is filed under 7 classifications — including macrolide antibiotics, cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) inhibitors, qt interval-prolonging drugs. Ashitaba has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates (moderate) — and none of Clarithromycin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Clarithromycin. Read the label on DailyMed › Ashitaba’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Ashitaba side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Ashitaba has no side effects.

About Ashitaba

What is Ashitaba?

Ashitaba
  • General wellness and longevity
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Digestive and stomach support
  • Anti-inflammatory

Ashitaba is a leafy plant from Japan that is eaten as a vegetable and taken as a supplement for general health, antioxidant, and heart benefits. Most of the supporting research comes from laboratory and animal studies, so its real benefits in people are still uncertain. It appears generally well tolerated as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Ashitaba is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Ashitaba record says about it on its own.

Ashitaba: dosing

There is no well-established, standardized dose for Ashitaba supplements. Studies have used different forms and amounts, so a single "correct" dose has not been set.If you choose to use an Ashitaba product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Clarithromycin

What Is Clarithromycin Used For?

Brand names: Biaxin, Biaxin XL

Clarithromycin tablets and oral suspension treat a range of mild to moderate bacterial infections in adults and children, including community-acquired pneumonia, acute sinus infections, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, strep throat and tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin infections, and middle ear infections in children. Tablets are also used in adults to eliminate H. pylori bacteria (in combination with other medicines) to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

Clarithromycin tablets — but not the extended-release tablet — are also used to treat and prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in people with advanced HIV. Clarithromycin extended-release tablets are approved only for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia in adults — not for the other conditions listed above.
