Warfarin Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ashitaba interacts with.

In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's the idea with warfarin and ashitaba. In test-tube studies, ashitaba seems to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps clear warfarin from your body. If that enzyme is blocked, warfarin could build up a bit more than expected, and a stronger blood thinner means a higher chance of bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious bleeding.

I'll be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern from lab work, and it hasn't actually been reported in real patients. Still, warfarin is one of those medicines where even small shifts matter, so I wouldn't add a concentrated ashitaba supplement without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. Eating it as a vegetable is much less likely to cause trouble.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
