Why this applies to Ondansetron

Ondansetron falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ashitaba interacts with.

In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's the short version for ondansetron (Zofran). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 as one of the ways it breaks this drug down. In lab studies (test tube only), ashitaba's plant compounds seem to slow that same enzyme. In theory, that could let a little more ondansetron linger in your system, which might nudge up its usual side effects like headache, constipation, or feeling tired.

The honest takeaway: this is a theoretical concern, and it hasn't actually been seen in real people yet. Eating ashitaba as a vegetable is very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Ondansetron isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip directions here. Just mention any ashitaba supplement to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

About Ondansetron

What Is Ondansetron Used For?

Brand name: Zofran

Ondansetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting in several situations. Oral forms (tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and oral solution) are approved to prevent nausea and vomiting from highly or moderately emetogenic (nausea-causing) cancer chemotherapy, from radiation therapy to the abdomen or whole body, and from surgery.

Ondansetron injection (given intravenously or intramuscularly in a clinical setting) is approved to prevent nausea and vomiting from emetogenic cancer chemotherapy — including high-dose cisplatin — in adults and children as young as 6 months old, as well as to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting.
