Bendamustine Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ashitaba interacts with.

In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's the basic idea: bendamustine (Bendeka) is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In lab studies, ashitaba's plant compounds appear to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in the body, your system might clear bendamustine a little more slowly, letting more of it linger. With a chemotherapy drug like this, that could mean a higher chance of its usual side effects, such as low blood counts, more infections, nausea, tiredness, or fever.

That said, this is only a theory from test-tube research and has never actually been reported in people. Still, since bendamustine is serious chemo, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any ashitaba supplement.

What Is Bendamustine Injection Used For?

Brand name: Bendeka

Bendamustine hydrochloride injection is used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It is also used for adults with indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) — a slow-growing type of blood cancer — when the disease has continued to progress during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen.

For CLL, how well bendamustine works compared to other first-line treatments (aside from chlorambucil) has not been fully established.
