Bendamustine Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP1A2 substrates may increase the effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist with rooibos and your bendamustine (Bendeka). Bendamustine is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In test-tube studies, rooibos extract appeared to slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in the body, your bendamustine could clear more slowly and build up, which in theory might mean stronger effects and more side effects like low blood counts, nausea, fatigue, or a higher chance of infection.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The concern comes only from lab data, not from people, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. Bendamustine is also a serious chemo drug, so please don't add rooibos tea or any concentrated extract without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist.

What Is Bendamustine Injection Used For?

Brand name: Bendeka

Bendamustine hydrochloride injection is used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It is also used for adults with indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) — a slow-growing type of blood cancer — when the disease has continued to progress during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen.

For CLL, how well bendamustine works compared to other first-line treatments (aside from chlorambucil) has not been fully established.
