Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Imipramine
Imipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ashitaba interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for imipramine: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 (along with others) to help break this medication down. Lab studies suggest ashitaba can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, your body might clear imipramine a little less efficiently, so more could build up in your blood. That could mean stronger side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness when standing, or a faster heartbeat.
I want to be honest, though: this is only a theoretical concern seen in test tubes, not something reported in actual people, and culinary amounts of ashitaba are unlikely to matter much. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them so they can keep an eye on you.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Imipramine page
“Imipramine (Tofranil) is an older tricyclic antidepressant, and the supplements on this page deserve real scrutiny before you add one. Most of the list acts on the liver enzymes that process the drug, so an ingredient can quietly raise or lower imipramine levels: grapefruit pushes them up, while St.”

About Ashitaba
What is Ashitaba?
- General wellness and longevity
- Antioxidant support
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Digestive and stomach support
- Anti-inflammatory
Ashitaba is a leafy plant from Japan that is eaten as a vegetable and taken as a supplement for general health, antioxidant, and heart benefits. Most of the supporting research comes from laboratory and animal studies, so its real benefits in people are still uncertain. It appears generally well tolerated as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
About Imipramine
What Is Imipramine Used For?
Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM
Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.
Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
