Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ashitaba interacts with.

In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.

If you take Lybrel (a birth control pill that combines ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel), here's the gist. Lab studies suggest ashitaba may slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down the estrogen part of your pill. In theory, slowing that breakdown could let more estrogen linger in your system, which might bump up estrogen-related side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, bloating, or mood changes.

The important part: this is only a test-tube prediction and has never actually been reported in people. Eating ashitaba as a food is unlikely to cause trouble, but concentrated supplements are less predictable. There's no need to panic, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding the supplement.
