WARFARIN (Coumadin)

Theoretically, taking noni juice concomitantly with warfarin might decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
In one case, a 41-year-old patient stabilized on warfarin had a decreased international normalized ratio (INR) following consumption of a specific commercial noni juice product (Noni juice 4 Everything). While the patient was still taking noni juice, an increase in warfarin dose did not produce an increase in INR. However, it should be noted that this particular product contained extracts and derivatives from more than 115 components, many of which contained vitamin K. Furthermore, vitamin K was listed as a separate ingredient of the product, suggesting that the product was possibly fortified with vitamin K. It has not been verified that noni fruit alone contains a significant amount of vitamin K or interacts with warfarin.

Here's the honest picture with noni and your warfarin. Warfarin is a finely tuned blood thinner, and your dose is set so your INR (a blood test that measures how thin your blood is) stays in a safe window. The concern is that some noni juice products may push your INR down, which would make warfarin work less well and could raise your risk of unwanted clotting.

But the evidence here is thin. It comes from a single case report, and that particular product seemed to be fortified with extra vitamin K, which is what really fights warfarin. Plain noni fruit hasn't been shown to do this. Still, with a narrow-margin drug like warfarin, even small swings matter. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting noni, and keep your INR checks consistent.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
