Babassu and Dalteparin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is already a blood thinner, so its whole job is to keep your blood from clotting too easily. The concern here is simple addition: animal studies hint that babassu may have its own mild anti-clotting activity. Stack that on top of dalteparin, and in theory you could tip a little further toward easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that takes longer to stop.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. The evidence is only from lab and animal research, not people, so this is a theoretical caution, not a proven problem. Still, since dalteparin is an injectable blood thinner, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any babassu supplement. Don't change your dalteparin on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalteparin page

“Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots, which is exactly why this list warrants real vigilance, and nearly all 218 ingredients on it thin the blood too. They are herbs and extracts with clot-inhibiting or antiplatelet effects of their own, so stacking them on dalteparin can push bl…”

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin is used to prevent clot-related problems in several situations. These include unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack (taken with aspirin), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip or abdominal surgery or during an acute illness that severely limits movement.

It is also used to treat symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE, a clot in a vein) and lower the chance it comes back. This applies to adults with cancer and to children from birth (gestational age at least 35 weeks). Fragmin is not indicated for the acute treatment of VTE.
