Babassu and Bromfenac Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Bromfenac Sodium

Bromfenac Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical picture. Bromfenac (Prolensa, BromSite) is an NSAID eye drop you use after cataract surgery, and like other NSAIDs it can slightly nudge up bleeding risk. Babassu, based only on animal studies, may also have a mild blood-thinning, anti-clotting effect. Put together, the worry is that the two could theoretically add up and make bleeding or bruising a little more likely.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is theoretical and comes from lab and animal research, not human studies, so it's far from proven. Also, bromfenac drops act mostly in the eye, so very little reaches your bloodstream. Still, if you notice unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or eye redness or bleeding after surgery, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
