Babassu and Anagrelide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Anagrelide

Anagrelide falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with babassu and anagrelide. Anagrelide already does two jobs: it lowers your platelet count, and it also has a mild blood-thinning, anti-clotting action on top of that. Babassu, at least in animal and lab studies, seems to have its own antithrombotic (anti-clotting) effect. So the worry is simple addition. Stacking the two could nudge you toward easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that's slower to stop.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based only on animal research, not human studies, so the real risk is uncertain. Still, since you're already on a platelet-lowering drug, I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding babassu supplements. Please don't change your anagrelide on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Anagrelide page

“Anagrelide (Agrylin) lowers platelet counts in people whose bone marrow makes too many, so bleeding risk is already the thing being managed, and most of this list pushes on exactly that. The bulk of these ingredients have some blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity of their own, from danshen and piracetam at the serious end down to fa…”

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Anagrelide

What Is Anagrelide Used For?

Brand name: Agrylin

Both Agrylin and generic anagrelide capsules are used to treat thrombocythemia secondary to myeloproliferative neoplasms — a condition where bone marrow disorders cause dangerously high platelet counts. The goal is to bring platelet counts down, lower the risk of dangerous blood clots (thrombosis), and ease related symptoms including bleeding and clotting events.
