Babassu and Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine

Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The part of Fiorinal that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins your blood by making platelets less sticky, which is why it can cause bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach irritation and bleeding in some people. In animal studies, babassu also seems to slow clotting. Stack the two together and, at least in theory, you could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this is based on lab and animal work only, not human studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Everyday culinary amounts of babassu are unlikely to matter much, but concentrated supplements are a different story. If you take Fiorinal regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding babassu, especially if you notice easy bruising or bleeding.

“The aspirin inside Fiorinal (aspirin, butalbital, caffeine) is the reason this list deserves careful reading rather than a quick skim. More than 200 of the supplements and herbs on file can thin the blood further and raise bleeding risk on top of aspirin's own antiplatelet effect, and even ordinary alcohol, beer and wine included, carr…”

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
