Babassu and Carbimazole

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTITHYROID DRUGS

Why this applies to Carbimazole

Carbimazole falls under ANTITHYROID DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithyroid effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with antithyroid drugs may result in additive hypothyroid activity, and may increase the risk of hypothyroidism. Some of these medications include methimazole (Tapazole), potassium iodide (Thyro-Block), and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Carbimazole works by slowing down an overactive thyroid, and there's some early animal research hinting that babassu may quiet the thyroid too. If both push in the same direction, the worry is that your thyroid could get pushed down a little too far. That can show up as fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, or a slow heartbeat (the usual signs of an underactive thyroid).

That said, this is theoretical. It comes from lab and animal studies, not from people taking the two together, so we don't really know if it happens in real life. Food amounts of babassu are far less concerning than concentrated supplement doses. If you're on carbimazole and curious about babassu, please check with your doctor or pharmacist first, and keep up with your routine thyroid blood tests.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Carbimazole page

“Carbimazole (Neo-Mercazole) calms an overactive thyroid, and since the drug itself can occasionally stress the liver, most of the supplements on this list earn their place by carrying liver toxicity of their own. Doubling up on liver stressors is the risk I take most seriously here, and the major-rated entries deserve a careful read fi…”

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
