Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the simple version: defibrotide (Defitelio) already works to keep your blood from clotting and to protect blood vessels in the liver. Babassu, in animal studies, also seems to have a mild blood-thinning, anti-clotting effect. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, tip the balance toward too much thinning, which means a higher chance of bleeding or bruising.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This concern comes only from lab and animal research, not from people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, defibrotide is given in a serious hospital setting where bleeding is closely watched, so don't add babassu (especially concentrated supplement doses) without first clearing it with your care team or pharmacist.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
