Babassu and Nusinersen Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Nusinersen Sodium

Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: this interaction was flagged because Spinraza is grouped with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines, and lab and animal studies hint that babassu might thin the blood a little. The worry is that combining them could raise the chance of bruising or bleeding.

But there's an important wrinkle. Spinraza (nusinersen) is actually given as a spinal injection (into the fluid around your spinal cord) to treat spinal muscular atrophy. It is not a blood thinner itself, so the category label doesn't fit it well. Bleeding around an injection site is something your care team already watches for. Since the babassu evidence is only theoretical, I wouldn't panic, but please mention any babassu use to your doctor before your next dose.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nusinersen Sodium page

“Spinraza (nusinersen) is given by spinal injection to treat spinal muscular atrophy, and it carries its own warnings for low platelets and kidney stress, which makes the 208 supplements on this page worth real vigilance rather than a shrug. All but six of them, 202 ingredients, could raise bleeding risk by thinning the blood or dulling…”

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
