Babassu and Danaparoid

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Danaparoid

Danaparoid falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Danaparoid (Orgaran) is a blood thinner that's given by injection to help prevent dangerous clots, often in people who can't use heparin. The concern here is fairly simple: babassu has shown some clot-slowing activity of its own in lab and animal studies. If it does the same in people, stacking it on top of danaparoid could push your blood-thinning effect a little further than intended.

In real life, that might mean easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that's slower to stop. I want to be honest though, this is theoretical and based only on animal research, so we don't truly know if it matters in humans. Still, since danaparoid already thins your blood, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding any babassu supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Danaparoid page

“Danshen, a Chinese herb sold for heart and circulation, is where I would start with danaparoid (Orgaran), an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots. Nearly everything here, 202 of the 218 ingredients on file, carries some blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity of its own, and stacking that on top of an anti…”

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
