Babassu and Pazopanib

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Pazopanib

Pazopanib falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something worth knowing if you're taking pazopanib (Votrient) for kidney cancer. Pazopanib already carries its own risk of bleeding and can affect how your blood clots, which is one reason your oncology team watches you closely. Babassu is being flagged here because animal studies hint it may have a mild blood-thinning, anti-clotting effect of its own. Stack those together and, in theory, you could see a bit more bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood that's slower to stop.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it comes only from lab and animal research, not human studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Small culinary amounts are far less concerning than concentrated supplements. Still, with a serious cancer medicine like this, please run any babassu product by your pharmacist or oncologist before trying it.

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
