Pazopanib falls under Qt Interval-Prolonging Drugs — the group American Hellebore interacts with.

American hellebore, also known as Veratrum viride, contains alkaloids that can potentially prolong the QT interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG). This effect is similar to that of certain medications known as QT-prolonging drugs, which can increase the risk of a serious heart rhythm disorder called torsades de pointes (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4728534/). Combining American hellebore with other drugs that cause QT-prolongation can increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the concern with putting these two together. Pazopanib (Votrient) is known to stretch out the heart's electrical reset, something doctors call QT prolongation. American hellebore can do the very same thing because its alkaloids mess with the heart's sodium channels. When two QT-stretching things stack up, the risk of a dangerous, fast heart rhythm called torsades de pointes goes up. That can mean fainting, a racing or fluttering heartbeat, or in rare cases a life-threatening event.

On top of that, hellebore is genuinely poisonous and can crash your heart rate and blood pressure on its own, so it's not a safe self-care product. Please don't combine these. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using anything containing American hellebore while you're on pazopanib.

What Is Pazopanib Used For?

Brand name: Votrient

Pazopanib tablets — sold as the brand Votrient and as generic pazopanib — are used to treat two types of advanced cancer in adults: advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer, and advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) in patients who have already received prior chemotherapy.

Important limitation: Pazopanib has not been shown to work in adipocytic soft tissue sarcoma (a subtype involving fat cells) or in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), so it is not used for those cancers.
