Babassu and Cangrelor

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Cangrelor

Cangrelor falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Babassu interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Cangrelor (Kengreal) is a strong antiplatelet medicine given through an IV in the hospital, usually during a heart procedure to keep your blood from clotting. It works right away to make your platelets less sticky. Babassu, based only on early lab and animal studies, seems to have its own mild blood-thinning effect.

So the concern is overlap. If both nudge your blood in the same direction, you could bleed more easily, think bruising, oozing, or harder-to-stop bleeding at the IV or catheter site. To be clear, this is theoretical and not proven in people. Since cangrelor is only given by your care team in a monitored setting, mention any babassu use to them so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cangrelor page

“Cangrelor (Kengreal) is an antiplatelet given by IV during heart procedures such as stenting, and I treat its supplement list with genuine care. All 202 ingredients on it touch blood clotting, and nearly every one adds to the bleeding risk cangrelor creates by design.”

About Babassu

What is Babassu?

Babassu
  • Skin and hair care
  • Inflammation
  • Wound healing
  • Digestive complaints
  • General wellness

Babassu comes from a Brazilian palm tree, and its oil and mesocarp flour are used in foods, cosmetics, and traditional remedies. Early lab and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, but there is very little human research to confirm any health benefit. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
