Evidence from animal research suggests that babassu has antithrombotic effects. Theoretically, babassu might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the honest picture with babassu and selumetinib (Koselugo). The concern on file comes from animal studies suggesting babassu may have a mild blood-thinning (antithrombotic) effect. If that's true in people, stacking it with anything that affects bleeding could nudge that risk up a little.

Selumetinib itself isn't a true anticoagulant, but it can lower platelets and cause bleeding-type side effects like nosebleeds or easy bruising in some kids. So the worry is more bleeding on top of bleeding. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based only on lab and animal data, not human studies. Food amounts of babassu are unlikely to matter, but concentrated supplements are a different story. Before adding any babassu product, please check with your child's oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Selumetinib Used For?

Brand name: Koselugo

Koselugo (selumetinib) is approved for adults and children 1 year of age and older who have neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) — a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue — when they also have symptomatic, inoperable plexiform neurofibromas (large, deep nerve tumors that cannot be surgically removed and are causing problems).

Both the Koselugo capsule and Koselugo oral granule formulations are approved for this use. The oral granule form is intended for patients who have difficulty swallowing whole capsules.
