Banaba and Celiprolol

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Banaba interacts with whole categories of medication. Celiprolol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Banaba in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Celiprolol

Celiprolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Banaba interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of banaba and antihypertensive drugs might cause additive effects.
Human and animal research suggests that banaba can lower blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Celiprolol is a beta-blocker that's used to bring down high blood pressure. Banaba is mostly known for nudging blood sugar lower, but research in people and animals suggests it may also lower blood pressure a little. So when you pair the two, the worry isn't about how your body breaks the drug down. It's that their effects could simply stack on top of each other.

In plain terms, your blood pressure might dip more than expected. That can leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or shaky when you stand up too fast. The evidence here is limited and the effect is likely mild, but it's still worth a heads-up. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings if you do try banaba.

ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)

2 of 2

Celiprolol also falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP).

Theoretically, concomitant use of banaba with substrates of OATP might reduce the bioavailability of the OATP substrate.
In vitro research shows that banaba inhibits OATP, particularly OATP2B1. OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the absorption of drugs and other compounds.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for celiprolol, which is a beta-blocker used mainly for high blood pressure. Your body relies on a little transporter called OATP (specifically OATP2B1 in your gut) to absorb celiprolol from the intestine into your bloodstream. In lab dish studies, banaba appears to block that transporter. If that same effect happened in people, less celiprolol would get absorbed, meaning weaker blood pressure control and possibly numbers creeping back up.

The important part: this is only test-tube evidence, so it's theoretical and not proven in real patients. I wouldn't panic, but I also wouldn't start banaba on your own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and if you do try it, keep an eye on your blood pressure readings so any change gets caught early.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.

About Banaba

What is Banaba?

Banaba
  • Blood sugar support
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Weight management
  • High blood pressure
  • Cholesterol support

Banaba is a leaf extract most often used to help support healthy blood sugar, and small early studies suggest its active compound corosolic acid may modestly lower glucose. The overall evidence is limited and short-term, so it should not replace prescribed diabetes care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you take blood sugar medicine.
