Banaba + Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin brand name: Clinafloxacin.
Banaba has a moderate interaction with Clinafloxacin. Theoretically, concomitant use of banaba with substrates of OATP might reduce the bioavailability of the OATP substrate.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
Why this applies to Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Banaba interacts with.
In vitro research shows that banaba inhibits OATP, particularly OATP2B1. OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the absorption of drugs and other compounds.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the quick version for clinafloxacin, which is an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family. Banaba has been shown in lab dish studies only to block a transporter called OATP that helps pull certain medicines from your gut into your bloodstream. The concern is that if banaba slows that doorway, your body might absorb a little less of an OATP-handled drug. Clinafloxacin works directly as-is (it is not a prodrug), so less absorption would mean less antibiotic getting into you, and a weaker punch against the infection.
I want to be straight with you: this is theoretical and based only on test-tube data, not real patients, so it may not pan out in real life. Still, when you're treating an infection you don't want anything weakening your antibiotic. My advice is to skip the banaba while you're on clinafloxacin and run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

By severity: 4 major · 62 moderate · 21 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page
“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”

About Banaba
What is Banaba?
- Blood sugar support
- Type 2 diabetes
- Weight management
- High blood pressure
- Cholesterol support
Banaba is a leaf extract most often used to help support healthy blood sugar, and small early studies suggest its active compound corosolic acid may modestly lower glucose. The overall evidence is limited and short-term, so it should not replace prescribed diabetes care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you take blood sugar medicine.
