Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both banaba and your Metformin XR work to bring blood sugar down. Stack them together and their effects can add up, so your glucose could drop lower than you expect. This isn't because banaba changes how your liver or kidneys handle metformin. It's just two things pushing in the same direction at once.

If your sugar runs too low, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually hungry or tired. The evidence here is fairly limited and short-term, so this is a manageable concern, not an emergency. Still, I wouldn't add banaba on your own. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor first so they can check your readings and adjust your plan if needed.

This page covers Banaba only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Metformin XR page lists 256 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).

By severity: 2 major · 215 moderate · 39 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metformin XR page

“Siberian cocklebur stands alone at the top of this list; its seeds have caused severe low blood sugar in humans, and no one taking metformin XR (Glucophage XR) should use it. Almost everything else here, 239 of the 256 ingredients, affects blood sugar too, so this list earns real caution.”

About Banaba

What is Banaba?

Banaba
  • Blood sugar support
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Weight management
  • High blood pressure
  • Cholesterol support

Banaba is a leaf extract most often used to help support healthy blood sugar, and small early studies suggest its active compound corosolic acid may modestly lower glucose. The overall evidence is limited and short-term, so it should not replace prescribed diabetes care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you take blood sugar medicine.
