Pravastatin Sodium falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Banaba interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of banaba with substrates of OATP might reduce the bioavailability of the OATP substrate.
In vitro research shows that banaba inhibits OATP, particularly OATP2B1. OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the absorption of drugs and other compounds.

Here's the gist for pravastatin specifically. Your body relies on little transport proteins called OATPs to ferry pravastatin from your gut and into the liver, which is exactly where the drug does its cholesterol-lowering work. Lab studies suggest banaba may block one of those transporters (OATP2B1). If that happens in people, less pravastatin could get absorbed and reach the liver, meaning it might not lower your LDL ("bad" cholesterol) as well as it should.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's only test-tube data right now, so it's theoretical and we don't know if it matters in real life. Still, since the concern is a weaker effect on your cholesterol, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Pravastatin Used For?

Brand name: Pravachol

Pravastatin Sodium tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to treat high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides (blood fats), and abnormal cholesterol levels. They are approved for adults and for children ages 8 and older with a hereditary form of high cholesterol called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH).

In people without known heart disease, pravastatin helps reduce the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular death. In people who already have coronary heart disease (CHD), it is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, coronary death, stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and procedures to restore blood flow to the heart — and to slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries.
