Here's something worth knowing if you're taking Pediazole (which combines erythromycin and sulfisoxazole) and thinking about having a beer. The erythromycin part can actually slow down how quickly your body clears the alcohol, so your blood alcohol level may climb higher and stay up longer than you'd expect. On top of that, the two together can stack up side effects.

In real life, that can mean more nausea, stomach upset, dizziness, or feeling extra drowsy and out of it. Since this combo is often used to treat infections like ear infections, you already may not be feeling great, and alcohol can make that worse. I'd hold off on beer while you're on this medication. If you have questions about your specific situation, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Pediazole combines two antibiotics, and one of them, the sulfonamide called sulfisoxazole, is the piece that matters here. Sulfonamides can sometimes trigger what we call a disulfiram-like reaction if you drink alcohol like beer while taking them. That means your body has trouble fully breaking down the alcohol, and the leftover byproduct builds up.

What does that feel like? Think flushing or a hot red face, a pounding headache, nausea or vomiting, a racing heartbeat, and feeling dizzy or weak. It isn't guaranteed to happen to everyone, but it's reported enough that it's worth avoiding. The safest move is to skip beer and other alcohol while you're on Pediazole. If you have questions about timing, your pharmacist or doctor can walk you through it.
