Ceftriaxone falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this interaction goes in one direction. Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) is an antibiotic that kills bacteria, and the probiotic Bifidobacterium breve is made of live, friendly bacteria. So if the two overlap, the antibiotic can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they ever get to do their job. The concern is a weaker probiotic, not a weaker or stronger antibiotic. Ceftriaxone still works fine, and it isn't a prodrug that needs activating.

Good news: this is mostly theoretical, based on how the two work, and it's easy to manage. Many people simply separate them by a couple of hours. Since ceftriaxone is usually given as an injection in a clinic, ask your pharmacist or doctor about the best timing for your situation.

What Is Ceftriaxone Injection Used For?

Brand name: Rocephin

Ceftriaxone Injection is used to treat bacterial infections in many parts of the body, including the lungs (lower respiratory tract infections), urinary tract, skin, bones and joints, abdomen, and bloodstream (septicemia). It also treats bacterial meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord), pelvic inflammatory disease, acute bacterial ear infections (otitis media), and gonorrhea.

In addition, a single dose of ceftriaxone may be given before certain surgeries — such as hysterectomy, gallbladder surgery, or coronary artery bypass surgery — to help prevent postoperative infection. It works only against bacterial infections; it will not treat viral illnesses like the flu or a cold.
