Clofazimine falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to know about pairing your probiotic with clofazimine: this interaction works the opposite of what you might expect. Clofazimine is an antibiotic used mainly for leprosy and some hard-to-treat infections, and like most antibiotics it doesn't pick favorites. It can kill off the live Bifidobacterium breve bacteria in your supplement right along with the bugs it's meant to target.

So the worry isn't that your medication gets stronger or weaker. Instead, the probiotic may simply not work as well, since fewer live organisms survive to reach your gut. This is a theoretical concern based on how these products behave, not strong human studies, so don't be alarmed. A simple fix helps: take your probiotic and clofazimine at least 2 hours apart. Your pharmacist can help you set up the timing.

What Is Clofazimine Used For?

Brand name: Lamprene

Lamprene (clofazimine) is used to treat lepromatous leprosy — the more severe, multibacillary form of Hansen's disease. It covers cases where the bacteria are sensitive to the antibiotic dapsone, cases where the bacteria have become resistant to dapsone, and cases complicated by erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful inflammatory reaction that can occur during leprosy.

Because drug resistance is a real concern, Lamprene is always used as part of a combination regimen with other anti-leprosy drugs for initial treatment — never alone at the start.
