SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS
Why this applies to Methylphenidate Hydrochloride
Methylphenidate Hydrochloride falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Biofeedback interacts with.
Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: this isn't about biofeedback changing how your body processes methylphenidate. Instead, both can nudge your brain's so-called seizure threshold a bit lower. Stimulants like methylphenidate can do this on their own, and there's a theoretical worry that EEG (brainwave) biofeedback might too. Stacked together, the concern is a slightly higher chance of a seizure in people who are already prone to them.
Honestly, for most folks this is a small, mostly theoretical risk based on limited evidence. If you have a seizure history, or notice things like unusual jitteriness, racing heart, or any spells of confusion, mention it. Before stopping anything, just check with your doctor or pharmacist so you can weigh it for your situation.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Biofeedback
What is Biofeedback?
- Chronic pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Anxiety and stress
- High blood pressure
- Urinary incontinence
- Tension and muscle relaxation
Biofeedback is a mind-body technique, not an herb or supplement. It uses sensors to show you real-time information about body functions like heart rate, muscle tension, or skin temperature so you can learn to control them. It is generally very safe and has reasonable evidence for headaches, certain pain conditions, and pelvic floor problems, but it works best alongside standard medical care.
About Methylphenidate
What Is Methylphenidate Used For?
Brand names: Quillichew, Adhansia XR
Methylphenidate treats ADHD across many oral and patch products. Age ranges differ by product. Some are approved for children 6 and older, some for children and teens, and some also for adults up to age 65.
Some immediate-release and certain extended-release methylphenidate tablets are also used for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder with sudden, overwhelming sleepiness). Methylphenidate oral solution and chewable tablets are described for attention deficit disorders in children, as part of a total treatment program that includes psychological, educational and social support. Not every product is approved for every use or age group.
