There is some concern that electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback might lower the seizure threshold in some patients. Theoretically, combining EEG biofeedback with seizure threshold-lowering drugs might increase the risk of seizure.
Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the gist of it. Cefpodoxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic, and like other drugs in this family it can, very rarely, nudge the brain a little closer to having a seizure. Separately, one specific type of biofeedback, EEG (brainwave) biofeedback, has been looked at for possibly lowering the seizure threshold too. The theory is that stacking the two together might add up and slightly raise seizure risk in people who are already prone to them.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern, the evidence is limited, and seizures from a normal antibiotic course are uncommon, especially if your kidneys work well. Most folks can use ordinary biofeedback (like muscle or breathing types) without any worry. If you have epilepsy or a seizure history and you're doing EEG biofeedback, just mention it to your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Cefpodoxime Used For?

Brand name: Vantin

Cefpodoxime Proxetil treats mild to moderate bacterial infections in both adults and children. It is used for ear infections (acute otitis media), strep throat and tonsillitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, acute sinus infections (acute maxillary sinusitis), uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis), and uncomplicated gonorrhea.

For gonorrhea, Cefpodoxime Proxetil treats uncomplicated urethral and cervical infections in men and women, and uncomplicated ano-rectal infections in women. It has not been shown effective for throat (pharyngeal) gonorrhea infections in men or women, or for rectal gonorrhea in men.
