Doripenem falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Biofeedback interacts with.

There is some concern that electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback might lower the seizure threshold in some patients. Theoretically, combining EEG biofeedback with seizure threshold-lowering drugs might increase the risk of seizure.
Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the situation with doripenem (Doribax) and EEG biofeedback. Doripenem is a carbapenem antibiotic, and this whole class can slightly lower the seizure threshold, meaning it can make the brain a bit more prone to a seizure in certain people, especially at higher doses or with kidney problems. There's a theory that EEG biofeedback might also nudge that threshold lower in some folks. Put together, the concern is that the combination could, in theory, raise seizure risk a little.

I want to be honest: this is mostly theoretical and not strongly proven. For most people getting a short course of doripenem in the hospital, it's not a major worry. Still, it's worth mentioning to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a seizure history.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
