Doripenem falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Zinc interacts with.

Zinc can decrease the levels and clinical effects of quinolones antibiotics.
Quinolones form complexes with zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing absorption of both the quinolone and zinc if taken at the same time. Advise patients to take these drugs at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after, zinc supplements.

Here's an important wrinkle to flag. The interaction we have on file is for quinolone antibiotics (think ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin), where zinc can bind the antibiotic in your gut and keep it from being absorbed. But Doripenem is actually a carbapenem antibiotic, and it's given as an injection straight into a vein, not swallowed as a pill.

Because Doripenem skips the gut entirely, the zinc-binding problem really doesn't apply to it. So I wouldn't expect your zinc supplement to weaken your Doripenem or change how well it fights your infection. Still, since this medication treats serious infections, it's always smart to mention any supplements you take to the hospital pharmacist or your doctor so they can double-check for your situation.

Doripenem also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.

Zinc might reduce levels of tetracycline antibiotics.
Tetracyclines form complexes with zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, which can reduce absorption of both the tetracycline and zinc when taken at the same time. Taking zinc sulfate 200 mg with tetracycline reduces absorption of the antibiotic by 30% to 40%. Demeclocycline and minocycline cause a similar interaction. However, doxycycline does not seem to interact significantly with zinc. Advise patients to take tetracyclines at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after, zinc supplements to avoid any interactions.

Here's a helpful detail about this one. The interaction we have on file is built around oral tetracycline antibiotics, which can bind to zinc in your stomach and end up less absorbed. But Doripenem (Doribax) is a different type of antibiotic, a carbapenem, and it's given as an injection into a vein, not as a pill you swallow.

Because doripenem skips your digestive tract entirely, zinc has no chance to grab onto it the way it does with oral tetracyclines. So the absorption problem described here really doesn't apply to doripenem. I wouldn't expect your zinc supplement to weaken this antibiotic or affect how well it clears your infection. Still, it's always smart to let your pharmacist or doctor know everything you're taking so they can double-check for you.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
